Magic Tricks Revealed: The Friends Who Always Stick Together

This is a fantastic up close card trick that requires about two minutes of preparation. After that it works itself, so much that you can even have a volunteer do all the work. By the time you finish reading this, you'll know exactly how to do this trick so you can go out and practice on your friends. And if you can tell a good story along with this trick, so much the better.

Here's how the trick will look to your friends. You begin with three Jacks face up on the table. You make up some long story about how they are best friends, and always find each other. Tell some story about how they had to go their separate ways. Put one Jack on top, one someplace in the middle, and one on the bottom. Remember to explain that Jacks of magical powers of reunion.

Then ask your volunteer to cut the deck once. When they cut the deck, tell them how the Jacks always find each other, and are never separated for very long, no matter what. Turn over the deck, so the cards are face up, and spread them out. Somewhere in the middle, the three Jacks will be together once again, stunning the crowd.

Here's the trick. Make sure to leave one Jack on top of the deck that you don't show to anybody. So when you put one Jack on top, there will actually be two on top. And when you put one Jack on the bottom, and your volunteer cuts the deck, they'll automatically be putting one Jack on top of two, so they will always be someplace in the deck.

Be sure to use as many sweeping gestures and crazy story elements as possible. Because the Jacks they find in the middle of the deck won't be the same Jacks that were laid at the beginning of the trick. But if you only lay them out long enough to show everybody that there are indeed three Jacks, and continue with your story for a couple of minutes after you place them in the deck, they will most likely quickly forget the exact suits.

Naturally, if your hands are quick enough, and with enough good story telling, you can repeat this trick a couple of times, but be careful, as next time they'll watch your hands more carefully. I've only been able to do this two or three times in a row before my audience figured out what was going on. Regardless, this is a fantastic trick to do that can start off a long string of card tricks. Have fun.
