If you want to jumpstart a career in television, think again. It hasn’t been a good month since I’ve started my stint as a news reporter and I’m already feeling the strain of working for one of the country’s lesser known networks. There’s the never-ending rumor of how our stories were but hybrids of the more popular networks that the pressure is always up to our necks. It doesn’t help that my co-workers, vicious media sharks, live by what seems to be The Anti-Secret.

Lest I fabricate news, I doubt if there’s anything relatively new to offer the public. It wasn’t until I looked out the window next to my cubicle and saw a power washer from Middletown, CT struggling to keep his balance on the scaffolding that I was reminded of Things Segment. For every single one of my reports, I’ll feature blue-collar jobs and try my hand at them as well. Fresh, not so; but it was the closest thing to “out-of-the-box news”, as our TV show’s tagline goes.
On my first Things Segment, I featured Power Washing in CT. The whole point of my segment was to feature services that we see being done on a daily basis but have never really thought of trying for ourselves. I waited patiently on the power washer who turned out to be from Rocky Hill to get the interview started.
The first half of the segment was power washing Rockhill, CT how-to. It starts with setting up the power washer equipment which you can rent for about $50-$80 dollars for one day. The trick is choosing the right size of equipment for the type of job, be it for exterior home cleaning, building cleaning or deck cleaning in CT. Connect the equipment to a hose or any water source and fill the detergent dispenser with cleaning solution. Start spraying top, down, side to side keeping the washer wand at a 45-degree angle while standing 3 feet away from the wall. After the surface has been washed with solution, rinse it off with water from the top down. Voila, clean exterior for your home or office’s exterior.
Second half featured yours truly applying the said power washing techniques proven effective, from home to deck cleaning in Wallingford, CT. Though hesitant, as the scaffolding seemed wobbly under my rather heavy weight, I managed to put on my game face for credibility’s sake. It wasn’t until I started operating the power washer equipment that I lost my game face. The slight trembling of the scaffolding turned into wild wobbling. My camera man – thinking it was normal to struggle while cleaning – zoomed in on the action for a more dramatic effect.
The segment ended up with me pulling a solid Bridget Jones – falling face first to the ground, camera zooming in on my protruding bum. How’s that for fresh and out-of-the-box.
