Why do these things pose a security risk?
Results of research will be shared with another company and eventually with
the public. Depending on the category of data that will be shared, there may be a
risk that something is shared that should not be.
Data will be placed on public Web servers that belong to each company. Neither company will have any control over the other's Web server. Will both meet
the security standards of their partner?
Each company will set up servers and provide access to researchers from the
other company as well as their own company. Will the security on each server be
adequate? How will access be authorized? Authenticated?
Are there any legal issues concerning the security of the information?
Laws address privacy concerns about any data that might identify individuals. Since this is research data, questions should be asked about this issue.
Are there any interoperability issues that concern the security of the information?
There may be. As the issues of authentication and authorization are addressed, interoperability concerns will need to be addressed.
Are there administration-related risk issues?
Computer administrators are always a risk. This project involves the sharing of
data between different companies—both on Web servers and other servers. Care
will need to be taken in assigning administrators.
The location of the servers will need to be considered. Will they belong to a
domain in the forest? To a separate domain? To a separate forest?
Are there network location issues?
Where are the shared servers located? On a perimeter network? Inside the firewall? Outside the firewall? How will network access be protected?
