The first rule to follow is to make sure that you leave yourself plenty of time to think about your present carefully. If you are not blessed with the killer gift buying instinct, panic present shopping certainly wont help matters.
If you cant come up with anything startlingly original, dont be afraid to stick to classic gifts that you might choose at any time of year. A good gift is a good gift, regardless of occasion, and plenty of classic gifts can always be given a personal twist.
To list but one example, books make great gifts for all occasions. If you want to make it personal, however, then look carefully into the tastes of those youre buying for. If the happy couple have similar authors of preference, then you could consider buying them a bound set of his or her complete works. Look out for first editions, rare releases or attractive hard back publications. Dont forget to write a heartfelt message in the cover, to remind them of your sentiments.
If you go for a popular wedding gift from a list, such as a small chest of drawers or a vase, you could always deliver it in person prior to the day itself, and fill the drawers with smaller, more personal gifts or messages of goodwill and fill the vase with a bouquet of fresh flowers.
For a high impact gift, you could buy the happy couple a puppy or a kitten. Of course, youll need to give this one some careful consideration and be sure of your audience before you buy. You may also need to make arrangements for the new addition to the family to be taken care of whilst the newly weds are enjoying their honeymoon.
Another increasingly popular option is to give a charitable gift. Instead of spending your money on minor electrical appliances or home furnishings, why not invest in the developing world through one of Oxfams gift ideas? Again, you should be sure of your audience prior to purchase, and you might like to buy a couple of small token gifts to have something solid to give to your newly weds in addition.
The internet is full of invaluable gift buying resources, form online gift shops to gift solution columns. If youre still running short of inspiration, conduct a quick search from your desk and see what you come up with.
