Anthony Vasquez, an American blind college graduate, made great achievement in learning Chinese-the most difficult language in the world. He said, “The biggest challenge a blind is facing is that some people in society still have prejudice on blind people.”

Anthony is a Spain descendant. He learned Chinese for just 4 years, but he can fluently express his feeling and past experiences. The 22-year-old young man was born in Los Angeles. His parents came from Mexico and can only speak Spanish. Therefore, his first language is Spanish and he started to learn English in primary school.
Anthony was a blind person since he was born. Although he can’t see anything, he has super strong memory, which is much helpful for him to learn language. Anthony learned Chinese through converting Chinese Pinyin to the language for the blind by computer software. He can read Chinese story and know what Chinese characters look like, but he can’t write them. Writing Chinese characters is too hard for a blind person. The majors he studied in Long Beach State University were news and Chinese.
He said in Chinese, “Originally, my goal of learning Chinese is to broaden my vision and challenge the most difficult language in the world. But after I have known Chinese culture and politics, I am crazy about it.”
Anthony said, “For blind people, it is difficult to learn Chinese. But some people still have prejudice on them, which could hinder their development. This is the biggest challenge blind people are facing.”
On May 27, Anthony together with thousands of students attended their graduation ceremony. He was also awarded the highest honor on the graduation ceremony by Literature College. Anthony said, “In the learning process, my family gave me a lot of encouragement and my teachers and classmate also supported me all the way.” Anthony is almost fully blind and he can only differentiate a few colors.
When he studied in the university, he went to China two times. When he visited China for the first time, he started to study the feasibility of going alone to China to study. Although there were only 18 professors and classmates accompanying him to China for the first time, he had built up the confidence of going alone to China. In 2008, Anthony went alone to China’s Nanjing Normal University to learn Chinese for a year.
Anthony has been accepted by Stanford University. He hoped he can get East Asian culture doctoral degree. Currently, Anthony’s ideal profession is journalist. He hoped he can use Chinese to study China, and then report it and make more Americans understand China’s development impact on the world.
