Moreover, some Indonesian students are going to China to study. Amelia, who is another student in Chinese class of Indonesia University, just applied for the scholarship of Beijing Foreign Language University. She is one of few students whose parents can speak Chinese. Amelia said, “Many of my classmates also wanted to go to study in China instead of America. The universities in American charge you too much.”
Last year, there were 7926 Indonesian students studying in China. This number is more than three times the number in 2003. It is the first time China was more welcome than America, which has only 7509 Indonesian students last year. The expensive tuition in the U.S. is just one reason. What is another reason? Indonesian people believe that China will become the most powerful country in the world, instead of the U.S.

Last year, the gross trade amount excluding petroleum products reached 22.41 billion US dollars. The plentiful forestry and mine are especially attractive to China. After China-ASEAN free trade agreement had taken effect in this year, the export volume from Indonesia to China excluding petroleum products increased by 137.6% in first two months of this year.
