Once you find a nanny that you are happy with, it is easy to think that your work is over – the job is done and you do not need to think about it anymore. In fact, keeping a nanny is a long term process, and in order to make sure that your child has a contented nanny who wants to stay with them you need to remember the important points you considered while you were finding a nanny.

As you and your nanny become familiar with each other, daily life becomes easier as you get into your routines. However, it is a danger that this familiarity can lead to taking your nanny for granted and when you are running late it is easy to ask for them to do an extra task, just this once, to help out. It may usually be no problem, and your nanny will probably be happy to do so, but be aware that if this becomes a habit you will have a disgruntled nanny who knows she is being taken advantage of. That is when nannies start looking for other nanny jobs.

Remember the contract you signed at the start and make sure that you do not ask your nanny to do work that was not agreed. It is a good idea to have a quarterly meeting with her to go through the contract and check that you both agree with what is being done. You may agree to add or remove some areas of work, the important thing is to discuss and agree it.
