'The Habit of Art’ by Alan Bennett is proving to be one of the hottest London theatre tickets for the National Theatre, which should be no surprise as they have used many of the ingredients of their biggest hit of recent years, 'The History Boys’. Alan Bennett also wrote that play which went on to have West End transfers and be a hit around the world. It was also made into an excellent film. Nicholas Hytner has directed both shows. They even have two leading actors in common, in the distinctive shapes of Richard Griffiths and Frances de la Tour.

The play tells the story of an imagined meeting between the poet W H Auden and the composer Benjamin Britten, which may not seem the obvious subject for one of the fastest selling London theatre tickets. It is set in a rehearsal room where a play about this subject is being rehearsed. This gives lots of scope for humour about the business of theatre and even the National Theatre itself. The second half settles down into the serious business of the play and concentrates on the actual meeting with the minimum of rehearsal room distractions. This makes the play seem slightly unbalanced and it is the superb acting, particularly that of the stage manager Frances de la Tour which sustains the interest of the viewer.
WH Auden was a great poet who sometimes shunned the limelight. During the 1930s, his poems were highly political and attempted to address the pressing issues of the day. It is interesting to speculate about what the great man himself would have made of his depiction in the play.
