American equestrians have extra cause for excitement during the 2010 games. The World Equestrian Games 2010 will mark the first time the games have been held away from the European continent since their beginnings two decades ago. Since the premiere of the games in 1990, they have been held in Sweden, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, and Germany. Now, the World Equestrian games are making their way to the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky! These games will mark the first return of the World Championships to Kentucky since 1978, following a championship win in Eventing by competitor Bruce Davidson.

Before the World Equestrian games were organized, each of the seven events that made up the games had a separate championship event. Championships were held at different locations and times, depending on the country of origin of the last winner. The World Equestrian games were proposed in 1983 as a way to bring these seven events together. Now, for sixteen days, some 800 competitors come together to represent 57 countries, each hoping to bring home the title of World Champion in their equestrian event. Previously there have only been seven events featured in the games, but 2010 also marks a change to the line-up. An eighth event, para dressage, is now included in the games along with the other seven events: dressage, driving, endurance, eventing, jumping, reigning, and vaulting.
