Finding the right fit between your feet and a pair of shoes or boots isn’t as simple as you might think. A lot of better shoe retailers have trained and experienced shoe fitters on staff. Unfortunately, these shops are also the expensive ones. If you aren’t shopping somewhere like that all the time, or you’re buying shoes online, it’s worth knowing a little about how to fit shoes. While most retailers, either on the internet or on the high street, will let you return shoes that don’t fit for a refund or exchange, that will only be possible if you haven’t worn them outside and they still look brand new. You can usually get away with trying them on for a few hours around the house (and it’s highly recommended that you do so with any pair of new shoes), but the moment you take them outside small scuff marks and signs of wear will appear, and even if you have blisters by the end of the day your chances of getting a refund are slim to nil.

So, once you’ve got a pair of shoes out of the box, try them on with an appropriate pair of socks. Woolly walking socks for walking boots, cotton socks for every day work shoes, sport socks for trainers, and tights for formal high heels. It really does make a difference to the size you’ll need. If possible, try shoes late in the day after you’ve been out and about. All feet swell over the course of the day, and shoes that are snug in the morning can be uncomfortably tight by the evening.
As you slip them on, you should be able to get a finger between your heel and the back of the shoe or they are too tight. If they are uncomfortable straight away, get rid of them. Sure, they might wear in and reshape, but they probably won’t, especially if the lining or outer are made of a synthetic material. Is there enough cushioning, and is the arch supported? Do they feel tight across the ball of the foot? If so, they will certainly pinch when you walk. Do your feet flop around in them when you walk?
Think about all those questions while you wander around the house for a couple of hours before making your final decision or taking them outside.
